It was the Bulls who last won a league series in New Orleans, in 1999. The Green Wave won all nine league weekends last season and have lost three C-USA sets at home in the league's six seasons.

"I'm just proud of our guys," said USF coach Eddie Cardieri after the Bulls won consecutive games for the first time in two weeks. "They didn't hang their head after losing Friday, and came back and played two good games of baseball."

Shannon Royal allowed one hit in 3 1/3 innings and was the winner in relief of Jon Uhl. USF erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth, as Mike Barclay's sacrifice fly scored Chris Cuccia to give USF the lead for good.

MORE COLLEGE BASEBALL: Kevin Howard went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to help host Miami beat East Carolina 8-4 in a game shortened to eight innings by rain. ... LSU's Ryan Theriot had a two-run double in the fourth to help the host Tigers come from four runs down and beat Florida 10-7 to complete a three-game sweep. ... John-Ford Griffin had three hits and scored three runs as visiting Florida State rolled to a 12-3 victory against N.C. State for its 15th win in 16 games.

COLLEGES: The Florida women's tennis team improved to 11-0 and 6-0 in the SEC with a 6-1 win against host Alabama. ... USF's Paco Antelo beat Alex Hartman at No. 1 singles, but the Bulls lost 6-1 to Mississippi to end a seven-match winning streak. ... Sisters Bree and Katy Berger each went 2-for-4 with a double as Florida beat Kentucky 5-4 in softball to complete a three-game sweep. ... The USF softball team won its semifinal against Tennessee Tech 3-2, but lost to Rutgers 6-2 in the title game of the Clearwater Parks and Recreation Tournament. ... Tampa's softball team split a doubleheader with Barry, losing the opener 3-0 and winning the nightcap 7-2. ... The Tampa men's and women's swim teams each finished seventh at the Division II national finals in Canton, Ohio.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: A former Nebraska player was arrested in Omaha in the fatal shooting of a one-time gang member who provided support to others trying to change their lives. Abdul Muhammad, 28, was booked for criminal homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony in connection with the shooting of 26-year-old Robert Paylor IV.

COLLEGE HOCKEY: Michigan State received the top seed in the West and Boston College was seeded No. 1 in the East for the 12-team NCAA championship tournament (complete pairings, 13C). Defending champion North Dakota and St. Cloud State also received first-round byes. The Frozen Four begins April 5 at Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y.

TRACK AND FIELD: World indoor champion Daniel Caines underscored his emergence as one of the top 400-meter runners by winning at the Glasgow Indoor meet. Caines overtook Troy McIntosh on the outside of the final bend and raced home in 46.21 seconds.

SOCCER: Coach Sven-Goeran Eriksson called up Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard for England's World Cup qualifying matches this week against Finland and Albania. Robert Convey scored twice as the United States beat Guatemala 5-0 in its opening game of qualifying for the FIFA World Youth Championship for players under 20.

CYCLING: Dario Frigo won the overall title in the Paris-Nice race, even though Fabrizio Guidi took the final leg of the event. Guidi edged Danilo Hondo to win the seventh leg, a 97.4-mile trek around Nice, in 3:38:41. In the final standings, Frigo beat Raimondas Rumsas by 26 seconds.

BOXING: Late Saturday, four-time world champion Johnny Tapia used a barrage of right-hand punches and left jabs to stop Famosito Gomez in six rounds in their non-title super-bantamweight bout in Albuquerque, N.M. ... Middleweight Andre Ward defeated Eric Kelly 18-8 in the finals of the U.S. Amateur Championship in Colorado Springs. Lightweight Paul Malignaggi used his reach and his uppercut to win a 12-2 decision against Luis Merced of Palm Bay.

SKIING: Garth Hager edged Mike Friedberg to successfully defend his dual moguls title, and Shannon Bahrke won the women's event on the last day of the U.S. Freestyle championships in Waterville Valley, N.H.
