Video Game ReviewsBy ROBB GUIDO © St. Petersburg Times, published March 19, 2001 Driving Emotion Type-SSYSTEM: PlayStation 2 MAKER: Squaresoft PRICE: $49.99 Squaresoft, known more for its role-playing games, scored an impressive number of licensed cars for this one, including models from Ferrari and Porsche. Other than this, however, Type-S won't overwhelm race fans. Grade: C+ ATV Offroad FurySYSTEM: PlayStation 2 MAKER: Sony PRICE: $49.99 Sony has finally delivered a top-notch game with this ATV racer. There's more to this one than just going around the tracks, and that means big jumps. Still, it loses points for being just another racing game. Grade: B+ Metropolis Street RacerSYSTEM: Dreamcast MAKER: Sega PRICE: $49.99 Now this is a racing game. Most racers have just a few courses for players to navigate, but this one gives players access to more than 200 real-life routes in Tokyo, San Francisco and London. Talk about a fun tour. Grade: B+ Paper MarioSYSTEM: Nintendo 64 MAKER: Nintendo PRICE: $49.99 Despite its overcuteness, Paper Mario is an extremely addictive hybrid, which combines turn-based battles with traditional Mario action that keeps players involved. Even Paper Mario's odd paper-thin looks won me over. Grade: A- Batman Beyond: Return of the JokerSYSTEM: Nintendo 64 MAKER: Ubi Soft PRICE: $39.99 Ubi Soft tries to bring a hipper Batman to Nintendo 64, but the result is hardly fresh. It's nice to switch between different Bat-suits, but the incessant beat-'em-up action made me want to reach for the Bat-spray. Grade: C- Sega Smash PackSYSTEM: Dreamcast PRICE: $29.99 MAKER: Sega Popping in the Sega Smash Pack brought back a lot of memories. Unfortunately, they were tarnished by a rather stale collection of old games. Columns and Sonic the Hedgehog are pretty much the only two titles I'd spend time with. Grade: C+ * * * - Robb Guido is an active gamer who lives in Tampa.
