USF to host forum on the Cold War

A Cold War forum, "The Myths and Realties of the Cold War Seen from Both Sides," is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Davis Room 130, the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg campus.

Francis Gary Powers Jr., founder of the Cold War Museum and curator of a special U-2 exhibition that will open Friday at Florida International Museum, will participate. Powers' father, Gary, piloted a U-2 spy plane that was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960.

Several Eckerd College and University of South Florida professors will take part in Sunday's discussion. From Eckerd there will be Sergei Novikov, professor of economics and Russian studies; Catherine Griggs, professor of American studies; and Bill Parsons, professor of history and Russian studies. They will be joined by USF's Darrel Slider, professor of political science; and Victor Peppard, professor of Russian language and literature.

The event is free.

Seafood festival benefits Agape center

ST. PETERSBURG -- A seafood festival to benefit the Agape youth center is Saturday at the center, 313 18th Ave. S. The event starts at noon.

Fish platters will be sold and entertainment is scheduled. For information, call 897-9181 or 823-1172.

Agape is an after-school program that longtime resident Wilma Green established in 1996 to teach youngsters how to succeed in school and later in careers.

The program recently moved from its original headquarters on 22nd Street S. The center now features a marine science program.

MusicFest to feature Pinellas students

Tickets are on sale for MusicFest, scheduled at 7:30 p.m. March 28 in the Bayfront Center Arena.

It is an evening of instrumental and vocal performances by about 2,000 Pinellas County elementary, middle and high school students. The Second Time Arounders, a 500-strong group of former band members, also will perform.

MusicFest is a collaboration between schools and the St. Petersburg Festival of States. The theme, Celebrate Music Hand In Hand, is billed as a multicultural tribute.

Tickets may be purchased for $6 each at the Bayfront Center Box Office, 400 First St. S, or at the Festival of States office, 33 Sixth St. S. For information, call 898-3654.

Job fair for disabled to be held March 29

Abilities of Florida and the Suncoast Human Resources will host a job fair from 1 to 4 p.m. March 29 at the Holiday Inn Select, 3535 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater.

The fair is free and open to the public and will focus primarily on employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Museum seeks women artists for exhibit

The Museum of Fine Arts Marly Group seeks women artists for its second annual Women in Art Juried Exhibition.

The exhibition, which is to include both performance, poetry, dance, composition, music and drama, as well as visual arts, photography, sculpture, fine crafts and fiber art, is scheduled to open May 26. Deadline for entries is April 2.

School needs vendors for Mayfest event

The annual Mayfest Spring Clean Flea Market and Craft Sale, being held May 25 and 26, is looking for vendors. Tables are available and costs range from $25 to $50. For reservations and information, call 347-9989.

Housing for low-income disabled, seniors available

Goodwill Industries Suncoast housing corporation is currently accepting applications for HUD rent-subsidized apartments for people with physical disabilities and for those ages 61 and older. The apartments are in Pinellas Park.

All applicants must meet HUD limited income criteria.

Foster care, adoption orientation is March 28

The Children's Home, a private non-profit residential treatment center for abused or neglected children, will offer a "Foster Care and Adoption Orientation" at 6:30 p.m. March 28 at the home, 10909 Memorial Highway, Tampa. Individuals interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent will have the opportunity to view the Children's Home and learn about the fostering and adoption process. YouthBuild offers training program for youths 16-24

YouthBuild St. Petersburg offers an eight-month program for youths ages 16 to 24 who reside in St. Petersburg that includes GED training, leadership development and training in the career field of construction, among other support services. To be considered for admission, call 893-1573.
