Middle school band fest is Thursday to Saturday

The Florida Bandmasters Association will host the annual Pinellas County concert band festival for middle school students from 3-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Petersburg High School, 2501 Fifth Ave. N.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, call Tony Fuoco at Oak Grove Middle School, 524-4430.

Students, adults to talk about race relations

Pinellas County high school students, their parents, school employees and community members are invited to participate in a Talking Schools program from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursdayand again on March 29 and April 5 at Clearwater High School, 540 S Hercules Ave.

The three-part dialogue will focus on race relations in Pinellas County schools.

Talking Schools is a countywide program designed to foster communication among high school students and adults. For information or to reserve a spot, call Cindy Flora, 586-1818, ext. 1503, or e-mail her at florac@pinellas.k12.fl.us.

Poynter Institute plans journalism classes, talks

The Poynter Institute is accepting applications for its high school summer journalism program. The program consists of a workshop July 22 through Aug. 1, followed by monthly after-school seminars during the school year.

The program is free and is open to any Tampa Bay area high school student entering 10th through 12th grades this fall. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 9.
