Moore to miss U.S. qualifier in Honduras

Joe-Max Moore, who hasn't played in nearly a month because of an injured calf, was dropped Tuesday from the U.S. soccer roster for the World Cup qualifier on March 28 at Honduras.

Moore has started five consecutive World Cup qualifiers for the Americans, most often pairing up front with Brian McBride. Moore was hurt in last month's 2-0 win against Mexico, the opener of the final round of qualifying from the North and Central American and Caribbean region, and hasn't played since.

Josh Wolff may have earned himself a spot in the lineup by scoring the first goal against Mexico and setting up the second. Wolff entered the game for McBride in the 15th minute after McBride left with a swollen eye following a collision.

McBride returned to the Columbus Crew of MLS on Sunday and scored two goals in an exhibition game Monday against D.C. United.

U.S. coach Bruce Arena picked his top two goalkeepers, Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel.

Friedel, who plays for Blackburn in England, was in goal against Mexico. Keller last played in a scoreless tie against Costa Rica in October.

MORE SOCCER: Carlos Valderrama scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute to give the Mutiny a 2-2 tie against Los Angeles in an MLS exhibition match in Fort Lauderdale. Paul Schneider also scored for Tampa Bay. ... The United States qualified for this year's FIFA World Youth Championship for players under 20, routing Trinidad and Tobago 5-1 in Tunapuna.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Miami opened spring practice, its first on-field work for new coach Larry Coker. "It was great to get on the field and get to work," he said. "Philosophically, we haven't made many changes, if any. ... We're off to a good start." ... Rick Kravitz, USF's defensive coordinator since the program's inception in 1996, was promoted to assistant head coach. Defensive ends coach Wally Burnham will serve as co-defensive coordinator with Kravitz. ... Add the John Thompson Foundation Challenge Classic to the list of "extra" games set to begin the 2001 season. New Mexico State will play Louisville on Aug. 23, at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, in what will be the first game of the season.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Matt Lynch allowed one unearned run and struck out three in six innings as host Florida State beat Akron 8-2. Mike Futrell and John-Ford Griffin homered for the Seminoles. ... Army scored four unearned runs in the first inning on the way to a 5-2 win against host Tampa. ... Mike Rabelo hit his third home run and had three hits as host Tampa defeated Massachusetts-Lowell 13-10.Florida's Brian Rose went 3-for-3 with a career high five RBI to lead the host Gators past Maine 8-7.

COLLEGES: A federal judge ordered a company to shut down two gambling-related Internet sites for unauthorized use of NCAA trademarks. U.S. District Court Judge Gerald Lee signed a temporary restraining order in Alexandria, Va., last week that froze the U.S. assets of BBF International of Haiti. The NCAA contends the sites lead consumers to believe they are sponsored or approved by the association. One Web site used pictures of athletes at member schools, the NCAA said. ... Host Miami beat Clemson 4-3 in women's tennis, avenging an earlier loss to the Tigers. ... Northwestern (896) won the team golf title and FIU's Michelle Simpson (219) took individual honors at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton. Kelly Martin was the top individual finisher for the Bulls, tied for seventh at 226, leading the hosts to a second-place finish, seven strokes back. Also, UCF (934) finished fifth, Miami (944) tied for sixth and FIU (948) tied for eighth. ... Florida sophomore Julia Scaringe was named the tennis player of the week by the SEC. ... Florida sprinter Geno White was named the SEC's athlete of the week for March 20-26. ... Former NCAA champion wrestler Brad Vering pleaded guilty to reckless driving, a violation reduced from a charge of drunken driving. The Nebraska senior was ordered to pay a $100 fine and court costs.

AUTO RACING: Andrew Gurtis, who has served as vice president of Daytona International Speedway for the past four years, has been named president at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

BOXING: Two months after a federal judge ruled that Bob Arum's contract with former welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya was null and void, the promoter struck back in court. Four days before De La Hoya's ring return under a new promoter, Arum asked for $25-million in damages in a lawsuit filed against De La Hoya and Time Warner in a New York federal court.

OLYMPICS: The minister overseeing Greece's preparations for the 2004 Games rejected claims by archaeologists that a rowing center would encroach on the site of the ancient Battle of Marathon.

SOFTBALL: The WPSL announced the names of 13 players who will play for an All-Star team as part of a barnstorming tour to begin June 1. Among the players is outfielder Danielle Cox, a two-year WPSL veteran who played collegiately at Florida State.

VOLLEYBALL: Beach partners Annett Davis and Jennifer Johnson Jordan, who formed the top-seeded U.S. women's team at the Sydney Olympics, are pregnant and will miss the 2001 season. The announcement was made through the Beach Volleyball America Tour, which begins its second season next month.
