The program will include two opportunities to attend a PAW's for Reading assembly. PAW's for Reading is a fundraiser to train animals for people who are sight- or hearing-impaired or have seizures. The conference also will include strategies for parents to use with ADD/ADHD children, functional behavioral assessment information, and communication techniques and strategies. The registration deadline is April 5. For information, call Cheryl Brinduse at the school at 344-4079.

CSMS ADVISORY ENHANCEMENT MEETING: Citrus Springs Middle School will hold an Advisory Enhancement Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the media center. For information, call 344-2233 or 489-6622.

RCES ADVISORY ENHANCEMENT COUNCIL: Rock Crusher Elementary School's Advisory Enhancement Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school media center. For information, call 795-2010.

GRANTS FOR RURAL CLASSROOMS: Sumter Electric Cooperative announces a new program for teachers to obtain 10 grants of $300 each to be used during the 2001-2002 school year for classroom projects. The grants allow teachers and students to try interesting projects and share experiences with others. Any rural kindergarten through 12th grade teacher whose school is in a community served by a rural electric cooperative or whose students' homes are served by a rural electric cooperative is eligible to apply.

The money can be used for anything that will enable completion of projects, such as the cost of field trips or materials. A brief estimate of expenditures totaling $300 should be included with proposals.

Applicants should submit one- to two-page proposals describing what students will investigate. All entries must be postmarked by April 15. Copies of the complete grant guidelines are available at any of SECO's six area offices or online at www.sumter-electric.com.

MODEL PROJECT COMPETITION: ESRI, a geographic information system software developer, announces a Model Project Competition for its ongoing U.S. Community Atlas project. The atlas is a grass-roots project for kindergarten through 12th grade students in which classes across the United States define the nature of their community or examine a local conservation issue. They create maps and text portraying key features. These presentations are combined on an Internet server and can be searched by characteristic and explored for similarities and differences.

One submission will earn "Model Project" designation. Three students and a teacher from that team will receive a trip to the 2001 ESRI International User Conference in San Diego. This year's categories are: the Community Description Project and the Community Conservation Project. Schools submitting a complete entry in either category will receive GIS software from ESRI. The limit is one software award per school for a description project and one for the conservation project.

The deadline for entries is May 18. Contest rules can be found at www.esri.com/communityatlas.
