Hernando digestBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published March 22, 2001 Adult baseball league ready for registrationThe National Adult Baseball Association will have sign-ups for teams and individuals for all levels of play from Saturday through April 18. The season includes 22 nine-inning games with playoffs. The season will last between three and four months with Sunday daytime games and one night game per week. Six games out of the 22 games will be travel games to Orlando and/or Tampa. Travel games will be scheduled for Sundays. Coast Guard Auxiliary begins boat class TuesdayThe Coast Guard Auxiliary safe boating class is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Training Center on Shoal Line Boulevard and Calienta Street in Hernando Beach, and continuing on March 29 and 30. This is a public education class and includes eight chapters. The course is open to all family members. The three-day course is free, but there is a $15 charge for materials. Meyer Chapter 415 and the Wings of Eagles Chapters of the Air Force Association will hold a joint meeting in the presidents room at the Seven Springs Country Club, Little Road, between Old and new SR 54 in New Port Richey on March 30. Cocktail hour begins at 1 p.m., with dinner of either sliced roast beef or lemon-crusted cod served at 1:30 p.m. Dinner cost is $11 and reservations are required before Tuesday. The guest speaker will be John Vaughn, Champus representative for South Florida and Georgia and will discuss the latest Tricare/Champus health care entitlement program. Workshop features oil paint artistThe Spring Hill Art League has invited California artist Mary Carole to hold a four-day workshop from March 28-31 at the United Church of Christ, Davis Hall, 4244 Mariner Blvd. Carole is an oil painter of a variety of subjects, but she is best known for portraits. Tax help available for retirees, seniorsThe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, sponsored by the Hernando County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program offers help with basic income tax returns at the following locations and times: STAR Education Center -- 1036 Varsity Drive, Brooksville, Mondays and Wednesdays 3 to 5 p.m.; Thursdays 3 to 7 p.m. Senior Citizens Center -- 7925 Rhanbuoy Drive, Spring Hill, Tuesdays 9 a.m. to noon. West Hernando Library -- 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill, Tuesdays and Fridays 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. East Hernando Library -- 31170 Cortez Blvd., Ridge Manor West, Mondays 1 to 5 p.m. Free Assistance is offered to those with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English speaking persons, and older taxpayers who file form 1040 EZ, 1040A, or a basic for 1040 Federal tax return. Volunteers are also alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. Taxpayers seeking assistance are asked to bring this year's tax package, wage and earnings statement (W-2) from all employers, interest statements from banks (forms 1099) a copy of last year's tax return if available, and other relevant information about income and expenses. Electronic filing is also available. All volunteers must complete an IRS training course in basic income tax return preparation before they can assist taxpayers. Volunteers are trained to complete forms 1040EZ, 1040A, and 1040. Some boat ramps closed to publicThe Hernando County boat ramps at Lake Townsen, off Lake Lindsey Road and Mountain Lake, have been closed to the public until further notice, due to unsafe conditions from the low water levels. For information call the Parks Department at 754-4154.
