Knee knocks Avs' Blake out 2 weeks

DENVER -- Avalanche defenseman Rob Blake might miss the rest of the regular season with a right knee sprain suffered Tuesday against the Sharks, team spokesman Jean Martineau said.

Martineau said he couldn't be more specific about the length of Blake's absence and he was listing him as "expected to miss the next few weeks."

The regular season ends April 8, and the playoffs are scheduled to begin three days later.

"At this point we have no time frame for his return," coach Bob Hartley said.

Hartley ended talk of an early return for defenseman Adam Foote, who has missed 45 games with a separated shoulder. Foote, who began skating with the team late last week, appears to be ahead of schedule.

Blake, 31, a former Norris Trophy winner as the league's top defenseman, was obtained from Los Angeles on Feb. 21 in a four-player trade that sent forward Adam Deadmarsh and defenseman Aaron Miller to the Kings.

To replace Blake, the Avs called up defenseman Bryan Muir from Hershey of the AHL. Muir, 27, was obtained from the Lightning on Jan. 23 and is making his first appearance with the Avalanche.

Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy is listed as day to day with tendinitis of the right knee. Goaltender Philippe Sauve was recalled in case Roy can't play tonight in St. Louis. Sauve, 21, had a 15-17-1 record and a 2.77 goals-against average for Hershey.

SWEDISH OLYMPIANS: Peter Forsberg, Markus Naslund, Mats Sundin and Nicklas Lidstrom were among 10 players selected for Sweden's Olympic team, joining goalie Tommy Salo of the Oilers, Mattias Ohlund of the Canucks, Mattias Norstrom of the Kings and Daniel Alfredsson of the Senators. Former NHL players Mikael Renberg and Jorgen Jonsson round out the group.

RED WINGS: Defenseman Chris Chelios (broken left thumb) had surgery. Forward Darren McCarty (sprained ankle) is wearing a boot-like brace. They are expected back for the playoffs.

SABRES: Center Michael Peca, 26, will play for Canada in next month's World Championships.

Devils win 12th straight

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Devils kept two long streaks alive with one easy victory.

Alexander Mogilny and Jason Arnott scored second-period goals 92 seconds apart as the Devils extended their franchise-record winning streak to 12 and their unbeaten streak against the Rangers to 23 with a 4-0 victory Wednesday night.

New Jersey, 15-0-8 against the Rangers since 1997, is five shy of the NHL record of 17 consecutive victories set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Martin Brodeur made 11 saves in recording the 50th shutout of his eight-season career, ranking him fourth among active goaltenders. It was his eighth this season, one shy of the league lead.
