Images of Overtown
Like other outsider artists, Purvis Young has no formal academic training and uses available materials to make his art. Sometimes he paints on corrugated cardboard or, in the case of Hanging Out, pictured, on found wood. Unlike other outsider artists, his self-education included not only the use of materials but also the history of art. He uniquely captures his urban surroundings in Miami's Overtown neighborhood. Young has received wide acclaim throughout the United States as one of the most important self-taught artists now working. He is among the more than 30 artists in "Contemporary Folk Expressions," opening this weekend at Clayton Galleries, 4105 S MacDill Ave., Tampa; (813) 831-3753. After a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, the show continues through April 21 during regular hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday. Free.
