Driver rankings

By KEVIN KELLY

© St. Petersburg Times, published March 24, 2001

Times staff writer Kevin Kelly rates the top drivers in the world based on performance from the CART, Formula One, IRL, NASCAR and NHRA circuits:

LAST WEEK: Every major series has had a least one race after the Indy Racing League opened its schedule Sunday at Phoenix. Sam Hornish Jr., 21, became the youngest driver to win an IRL event. Formula One defending champion Michael Schumacher continued his dominance at the Malaysian Grand Prix. He won the pole and race for the second time in as many events this season. His Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello and McLaren's David Coulthard are tied for second in the F1 standings. Dale Jarrett won his first race of the season at Darlington to take over the Winston Cup points lead, but Jeff Gordon might've won had engine trouble not knocked him out of the race. Though the Gatornationals were postponed because of rain, Top Fuel rookie Darrell Russell still holds a 35-point lead over Doug Kalitta. CART was idle.
