NIT files suit vs. the NCAA

The National Invitation Tournament, which returns to Madison Square Garden next week, might soon find itself extinct, according to a report in New York's Daily News.

The NIT has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the NCAA is trying to put the New York tournament out of business.

"This is about keeping basketball for the city," said Jeffrey Kessler, the Manhattan-based attorney representing the NIT in the antitrust suit filed in the Southern District of New York.

NCAA legislation expected to be approved next month would require teams to count all preseason tournament games toward the NCAA's cap on the number of games a team may play during the regular season. That, according to Kessler, would destroy the NIT.

Preseason tournaments, including the NIT, have been exempt from the NCAA cap. Teams participating in the Preseason NIT are charged only one game toward the 28-game limit for the season, even if they advance to the final.

ALABAMA 85, PURDUE 77 (2OT): Kenny Walker scored 24 and Erwin Dudley had 20 points and 16 rebounds in West Lafayette, Ind., as Alabama advanced to the semifinals.

Alabama faces Detroit on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Terrance Meade, who scored 14, put Alabama ahead with 2:33 left in the second overtime. The Crimson Tide (24-10) played the second overtime without Walker, who fouled out. Dudley scored the next four points for a five-point cushion and Purdue couldn't come back. The Boilermakers (17-15) made only one basket and two free throws in the second overtime.
