Sorenstam wants one more big round

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Annika Sorenstam has won two tournaments, shot a record 59 and put herself in contention for a major championship in the past three weeks.

She is exhausted, fighting a cold and wants nothing more than to put her clubs in the closet for a long while.

Before she does, she believes she has one big round left in her.

"This is it. This is all I've got," Sorenstam said.

The hottest player in golf Saturday gave herself a chance to win the tournament she most wants, shooting a second straight 2-under-par 70 to pull within a shot of Rachel Teske in the Nabisco Championship.

Sorenstam's last major title was the 1996 U.S. Open.

"My goal is to be patient and give it my all," Sorenstam said. "I hit all 18 greens today, but my putter was a bit off. Hopefully tomorrow I can be sharp with my putter."

Sorenstam three-putted twice but nearly aced the par-3 17th for a final birdie that got her to 4 under for the tournament, a shot behind Teske, who shot 66, the lowest round of the tournament, to come out of the pack and take the lead.

Sorenstam was tied with 1998 champion Pat Hurst, the second-round leader, and Akiko Fukushima. Two-time champion Dottie Pepper was another shot behind.

The 14-year-old Wongluekiet twins of Bradenton had identical 223 scores, 12 shots off the lead. Aree Song Wongluekiet shot 74, and sister Naree Song shot 76.

EMERALD COAST CLASSIC: John Schroeder remained on top after the second round of the Senior PGA Tour event at Milton, a stroke ahead of fast-closing Jim Ahern. Schroeder, seeking his first tour victory in six seasons, shot 3-under 67 for an 8-under 132 total at the Moors Golf Club.

CHUMASH CASINO CLASSIC: Ju Yun Kim shot 3-under 69 in the final round to win the Futures Tour event by one over Jeanne-Marie Busuttil at Paso Robles, Calif. Kim's three-round total was 4-under 212. Beth Bauer of Tampa tied for 10th at par 216 after 70.

SAO PAULO BRAZIL OPEN: Lightning disrupted the European PGA Tour event again, leaving Darren Fichard with a three-stroke lead.

The 99 players not able to complete the second round Friday because of lightning did so. Then foul weather forced postponement of the third round until today. Officials cut the event to three rounds to finish on schedule.

Fichard shot 4-under 67 and was at 14-under 128. Brett Rumford climbed into second with 65 that left him at 131.
