Baffert horse wins in Dubai

Captain Steve has earned worldwide respect -- and the richest prize in thoroughbred racing.

"This win shows that he is a world class horse and people didn't give him the respect he deserved," trainer Bob Baffert said Saturday after the 4-year-old raced to a 3-length victory in the $6-million Dubai World Cup at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Captain Steve, the favorite, rallied to beat To The Victory. Hightori was third.

MORE HORSE RACING: Balto Star led wire to wire in his stakes debut, the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. He was 123/4 lengths ahead of long shot Halo's Stride.Mongoose was third. ... A P Valentine got back in the Kentucky Derby hunt with a win at Hialeah. He ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.20, breaking the track record set in 1986 by one-fifth of a second. ... Albert The Great won the Grade III Widener Handicap by 53/4 lengths at 1-20 at Hialeah. ... Crafty Shaw, a 10-1 shot, won the Rebel Stakes by a length at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Wide receiver-turned-quarterback Anquan Boldin completed 7 of 15 passes for 206 yards and hit Javon Walker for a 53-yard touchdown during a Florida State scrimmage. ... Florida QBs Brock Berlin and Rex Grossman continued competition for the starting job as Berlin was 12-of-19 for 149 yards and two touchdowns and Grossman was 10-of-23 for 92 yards and two interceptions. Running back Ran Carthon separated his right shoulder and will miss the rest of spring drills, coach Steve Spurrier said. ... Redshirt freshman Willis McGahee was the highlight at Miami's scrimmage, rushing 11 times for 121 yards and a touchdown.

GREYHOUNDS: Long shots won in three of four qualifying rounds for the Distance Classic at Derby Lane. BD's Robin ran the fastest time of the series, 37.67. Other winners were Boot Scootin Gal, Stephen Fetchit and Kiowa WW Hurby. The field faces off again Wednesday night, and the top 16 will advance to Round 3. The final is April 7.

SOCCER: The Mutiny wrapped up its MLS preseason tournament with a 3-2 win over the Fusion in Fort Lauderdale. Guest players Kent Njoku and Paul Schneider and star forward Mamadou Diallo scored for the Mutiny. COLLEGES: Texas defended its title at the men's NCAA swimming and diving championships at College Station, Texas. UF was fifth. ... South Florida high jumpers Stephan Ketter and Jimmy Baxter and Albany State's Cory Crosby came up short in a jump-off at the FSU Relays as the Seminoles' Shawn Brown, formerly of USF, went 7-2 1/2 to take the title. Crosby was second; Ketter and Baxter tied for third. ... UM's Gus Martin (110-meter hurdles) and Jabari Ennis (pole vault) won at the FIU Invitational. Dore Madere (discus) and the 4x400 relay won for the UM women. ... In the Division I hockey tournament, Wisconsin beat Providence 4-1 and Michigan topped Mercyhurst 4-3 in the West Region and North Dakota beat Colorado College 4-1 in the East Region. ... In baseball, FSU (22-6, 7-1 ACC) improved to 19-1 at home, beating North Carolina (16-10, 0-5) 12-6. USF (13-14, 4-1 C-USA) beat visiting UAB 7-1. The teams play at 1 p.m. today at Red McEwen Field. Host Miami (24-6) beat Northeastern 5-2. The Gators (15-13, 2-6 SEC) beat visiting Arkansas 8-4. Host Tampa (26-3, 3-0 Sunshine State) swept Rollins 4-2 and 7-2. Lynn and Eckerd split a doubleheader at Boca Raton. The Knights won 6-3, then lost 3-2. Saint Leo won two against Florida Tech, 9-2 and 9-8. ... In women's tennis, FSU beat N.C. State 6-1. ... In men's tennis, host USF fell to Miami 4-3. ... In men's golf, USF was 17 strokes off the lead at the Alabama Spring Invitational. UCF was ninth, FSU 10th. UF was fourth in the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational at Statesboro, Ga. ... In softball, UF defeated Michigan State 4-1 and FAU 1-0 at the FAU Tournament.

BOXING: Wladimir Klitschko stopped Derrick Jefferson in the second round to retain his WBO heavyweight title at Munich, Germany. ... Sven Ottke stopped James Crawford in the eighth round to defend his IBF super-middleweight title at Magdeburg, Germany. ... Mike Tyson will fight David Izon in June, possibly in Australia, according to Jay Larkin of Showtime. It had been announced that Tyson would fight Izon May 19 in the Washington area. ... David Tua knocked out Danell Nicholson in the sixth round late Friday at Las Vegas.

ETC.: Host Tampa Bay (12-23) won its second ABA 2000 game in a row, defeating Memphis 101-99. ... Germany's Erik Zabel won the Milan-to-San Remo cycling race at San Remo, Italy. ... Mary Zorn (compound), Richard Johnson (recurve) and David Cousins (compound) won gold, silver and bronze, respectively, for the U.S. team at the Archery Indoor World Championships in Florence, Italy.
