Performers win Opera Guild awards
The Florida Suncoast Opera Guild has awarded prizes to four college students and young professionals from throughout Florida after a recent competition at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg. After more than 30 competitors had each sung an operatic aria, judges awarded first place ($3,000) to Keri Alkema of Winter Park, second place ($2,000) to Janice Sullivan of Tallahassee, third place ($1,000) to Han Wook Kim of Miami, and fourth place ($500) to Jennifer Sanchez of Largo. Last month, 25 high school vocalists from Pinellas County competed in the Junior Vocal Competition. First prize ($1,000) went to Jamieson Lindenberg of Gibbs High School; second prize ($500) to Gloria Rice of Dunedin High School, third prize ($200) to Jean Collins of Gibbs High School, and fourth prize ($100) to Katie Olson of East Lake High School. The Opera Guild, founded in 1964, has held the high school competition since 1970, and the young professionals competition since 1980. Past winners have gone on to careers in opera and academia.
The Pinellas Opera League is seeking applicants for a $1,500 scholarship it offers to aspiring opera singers. To be eligible, applicants must be accepted to, attending or recently graduated from a college or university offering a degree in vocal music. Application deadline is April 18. Call (727) 942-3565.
