Minnesota-Duluth won the first NCAA women's hockey championship in the school's second season of competition, beating St. Lawrence 4-2 on Sunday at Minneapolis.

The Bulldogs outshot the Saints 13-2 in the second period and took a 3-1 lead on goals by Swedish Olympian Maria Rooth and Hanne Sikio.

The Bulldogs (28-5-4) got goals from players from each of the four countries represented on their roster. Former Canadian national team coach Shannon Miller built a champion in a short time by recruiting from Sweden, Finland, the United States and Canada.

The Saints finished 24-8-3.

Harvard beat top-seeded Dartmouth 3-2 in the consolation game.

MORE COLLEGE HOCKEY: Harvard's Jennifer Botterill won the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given to the women's player who displays high personal and team standards. ... In the Division I men's tournament, Michigan State beat Wisconsin 5-1 to advance to the Frozen Four for the second time in three seasons. Boston College beat Maine 3-1 to advance to its fourth straight Frozen Four.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: An NCAA investigation into alleged recruiting violations at Alabama is looking at former coach Mike DuBose's role in two cases, the Birmingham (Ala.) News reported. Investigators are asking about DuBose's role in the recruitment of Michael Gaines of Tallahassee and the referral of Mac Tyler of Bessemer, Ala., to a Connecticut prep school. The newspaper could not reach DuBose for comment.

COLLEGES: In baseball, John-Ford Griffin went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Ryan Barthelemy hit a three-run home run as host Florida State completed a three-game sweep of North Carolina 8-7. Host Miami beat Northeastern 5-3 for coach Jim Morris' 1,000th career victory. Ryan Shealy's two-run homer propeled host Florida to a 4-1 win over Arkansas and a sweep of the three-game series. Host South Florida defeated Alabama-Birmingham 5-1 as Jon Uhl (2-3) won for the first time since Feb. 20. ... In softball, Florida lost to Florida Atlantic 2-1 in nine innings in the FAU Tournament title game. Earlier, UF's school-record nine-game winning streak ended with a 4-3 loss to Michigan State. Tampa and Saint Leo split a doubleheader. UT won the first game 1-0, the Lions the second 5-3. ... In men's golf, Florida finished fifth (6-over-par 870) at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. Georgia won (10-under 854). UF's Bubba Dickerson was third individually (4-under 212). ... In women's tennis, host South Florida lost to TCU 5-2. ... UM's Kyle Prandi won the platform diving title at the Division I championships at College Station, Texas.

BASKETBALL: Kwan Johnson scored 30 points as the host Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs won their third straight game, 105-102 over Kansas City in ABA 2000.

BOXING: Oscar De La Hoya and new trainer Floyd Mayweather were pleased after De La Hoya stopped Arturo Gatti in the fifth round in his first fight in nine months late Saturday at Las Vegas. But both thought there is room for improvement. "I gave myself a C, " De La Hoya said.

FIGURE SKATING: The last four women who won the world title the year before the Olympics went on to win the gold medal. "I thought about that," Michelle Kwan said after winning her fourth world title late Saturday at Vancouver. "You can't go by what happens in the history books." But in beating silver medalist Irina Slutskaya, Kwan answered questions about whether she could keep up technically with a beautiful triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination, and she did five other triple jumps.

SKIING: Former Olympic downhill champion Bill Johnson remained hospitalized in a coma, but doctors were "extremely pleased" by his progress since his crash three days earlier. Dr. Keith Lara of Kalispell (Mont.) Regional Medical Center said Johnson was responding to pain and making small movements in his bed. ... Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden won the women's super-giant slalom at the U.S. Alpine national championships in 1 minute, 22.45 seconds, at Whitefish, Mont. That gave the title to Jonna Mendes, second in 1:22.83. Wiberg, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and winner of 24 World Cup races, competed independently, using the event for training as she returns from a knee injury. ... With World Cup overall champion Per Elofsson not competing, Sergei Dolidovich was the winner of the season finale on the men's cross-country circuit at Kuopio, Finland.

SOCCER: Mexico won an important World Cup qualifier, routing Jamaica 4-0 at Mexico City behind two goals each from newcomer Antonio De Nigris and Jared Borguetti. Mexico (1-1) moved into first place in the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region, ahead of the United States (1-0) and Jamaica (1-1) on goal difference. ... More than 12,000 professional players in Brazil become free agents today under the new "Pele Law," which ends the reserve clause binding players to teams. The players will be governed by general labor laws.

ETC: Mohammed Mourhit easily retained his world cross-country title at Ostend, Belgium, despite a tender ankle and a muddy, waterlogged course. Mourhit was timed at 39 minutes, 53 seconds for the 7 1/2 miles at Wellington Hippodrome, 10 seconds ahead of Sergey Lebed of Ukraine.
