Around and aboutBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published March 27, 2001 Prep classificationsWhen it comes to high schools and district classifications, no news is good news. The Florida High School Activities Association's Board of Directors voted Monday to retain the current method of classifying member schools in individual sports for FHSAA State Series competition. Classifications and district assignments will be for a two-year period (through the 2002-03 school years), with the FHSAA forming classifications for each individual sport by dividing the total number of schools committed to participate evenly into the number of approved classifications for that sport. "Unlike with the team sports, there haven't been any requests from our member schools to standardize the classification and district assignments for individual sports, since there is no mandatory district schedule in these sports," FHSAA commissioner Bob Hughes said. "Therefore, we didn't see the need to adjust the provisions of the Classification Policy dealing with individual sports at this time." While it likely won't make much of a splash on the North Suncoast, the FHSAA also on Monday approved recognition of boys and girls water polo as interscholastic sports. The FHSAA requires that a minimum of 32 schools participate in the sport for at least two years, then petition the commissioner in writing for recognition of the sport. Not more than 75 percent of the schools can be located in the same region of the state. Recognition indicates that the sport must abide by FHSAA by-laws, policies, rules and contest regulations with regard to student eligibility and sportsmanship in interscholastic contests.
