Senators alone in 1st in East

OTTAWA -- Alexei Yashin's goal with 6:59 left in the third period lifted the Senators into a 3-3 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers and sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

The goal was Yashin's team-leading 35th.

Philadelphia had the lone shot in overtime.

Ottawa had a three-game winning streak stopped but is unbeaten in six of seven (5-1-1-0) and leads New Jersey by one point for the top seed in the East.

CANADIENS 4, HURRICANES 2: Patrice Brisebois had his first two-goal game of the season as Montreal snapped Carolina's three-game home winning streak.

The Hurricanes remained two points ahead of the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Brisebois had the sixth two-goal game of his 11-year NHL career. The last was last season against the Lightning.

Carolina's Ron Francis had one assist to move within one of tying Paul Coffey for third on the NHL career list with 1,135.

SABRES 4, THRASHERS 0: Miroslav Satan scored two goals and Donald Audette's first goal for visiting Buffalo came against his former team.

Dominic Hasek stopped 19 shots for his 10th shutout.

Audette's 33rd goal of the season was his first in five games for Buffalo, which acquired him five minutes before the March 13 trade deadline.

AVALANCHE: Defenseman Adam Foote, who has missed 35 games with a separated shoulder, was expected to return against Edmonton on Wednesday. Center Stephane Yelle has a minor knee sprain and will miss a couple of games, coach Bob Hartley said. He will be ready for the playoffs, Hartley said.

CANUCKS: Second-leading scorer Andrew Cassels could miss the final six games of the regular season because of a sprained left ankle. He was scheduled to be examined today.

MAPLE LEAFS: Wing Garry Valk was injured when he was accidentally hit near the right eye by the tip of teammate Darcy Tucker's stick during practice.

Valk was helped off the ice and taken to Toronto Western Hospital, where he was examined by Robert Devenyi, the team's eye doctor.

"It's in the fleshy part underneath the skull," general manager/coach Pat Quinn said. "It doesn't look like anything direct on the eye, but we have to find out more."

TEAM CANADA: Eric Lindros will be asked to join the team for the world championships, Canadian Hockey Association spokesman Brad Pascall. Lindros' attorney, Gordon Kirke, said Lindros was to return from a vacation Monday night and would be in touch with Team Canada officials shortly.
