The World in briefCompiled from Times wires © St. Petersburg Times, published March 27, 2001 Polls: U.S. likes Bush more than his ideasWASHINGTON -- President Bush gets generally good marks on his overall job performance from most Americans, polls suggest, but the public shows less enthusiasm for some of his policies and priorities, from tax cuts to the environment to his perceived attitudes about big companies. Nearly six in 10 approve of Bush's job performance, according to polls by ABC News-Washington Post and CNN-Time. The number who don't approve has increased by 10 points in the last month in the ABC-Post poll, to 33 percent. About half approved of the president's handling of the economy and environmental issues, with slightly more supporting his handling of international issues, the polls found. Ambassadors to Japan, Bahamas, France namedPresident Bush on Monday named former Sen. Howard Baker to be ambassador to Japan, saying he was proud to tap "a true statesman" for the post. Baker would replace former House Speaker Tom Foley and would continue a trend of prominent politicians serving in Tokyo. Bush also formally announced his nominations of J. Richard Blankenship as ambassador to the Bahamas and San Francisco banker Howard Leach as ambassador to France. Blankenship is director of the Mandarin Veterinary Clinic in Jacksonville. Also Monday . . .The United States and Russia have shut down a Moscow-based international pornography ring that used the Internet to sell videotapes of children engaged in sexual acts, authorities said.
