Students cook up winning recipes

Students in cooking classes throughout the county put their creativity and their cooking skills to the test in the annual Healthy Heart Contest held last week at three sites -- Wesley Chapel High School, Marchman Technical Education Center and River Ridge Middle/High School. Entrants were required to create recipes that are low in saturated fat but are tasty, too.

County-wide winners: Middle school level: Seven Springs Middle School for "Caribbean Creole," prepared by students Reese Bell, Anthony Marra, Kyle Todd and Vernon Matzke. Their teacher is Gale Richards. High school level: River Ridge High for "South of the Border Fettucini," prepared by studentsAna Echeverria, Emily Olivier, Amber Rav and Suzanne Suska. Their teacher is Vickie Tennant. Job Preparation: Moore Mickens Education Center: "Spicey Grouper," by student Quinton Pate. His teacher is Tricia Hall.
