Officials say bicyclist hit after turning into trafficBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published March 29, 2000 EAST LAKE -- A bicyclist riding on the shoulder of East Lake Road on Tuesday was injured when he apparently turned into the path of traffic and was struck by a pickup truck. The accident happened at 12:13 p.m. across the street from East Lake Fire & Rescue station 56. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, David L. Gifford, 59, of 5076 Pinnacle Drive in East Lake Woodlands was traveling north against the flow of traffic, when he was hit by a Ford pickup driven by Robert W. Danneman, 22, of 124 Annwood Road, Palm Harbor. Danneman was on his way to work at the YMCA of North Pinellas when the accident happened. FHP Trooper Daniel Cole said Danneman, traveling southbound, swerved to avoid Gifford and "almost missed the guy." The investigation of the accident is continuing. Gifford was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was listed in stable condition with a broken nose, facial cuts and broken ribs. "I hope he's fine. My prayers are with him," Danneman said. * * *© St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
