Look beyond the surface
On the surface, Arrival/Departure, by St. Petersburg artist Lance Rodgers, looks easy to understand: a jumbo jet zooms toward a landing while tailfins of an old car indicate it is moving out of the picture. But is this just a pretty painting, showing off Rodgers' artistic proficiency? Or does the odd combination of elements deliver a message about the environment? Is Rodgers warning us that we're only trading one gas guzzler for another? Are we exchanging nature's beauty (the hibiscus) for the scorched land in the distance? Rodgers is exhibiting at Salt Creek Artworks, 1600 Fourth St. S, St. Petersburg, through April 14. A reception for the show is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
