Recent releases recommended by Times film critic Steve Persall
1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon -- Ang Lee's martial arts fable, which picked up four Oscars, including Best Foreign Film, is a dreamy saga of flying warriors, feminist politics and the sheer joy of making fantasies become real on-screen.
2. Traffic -- Steven Soderbergh was named Best Director for his engrossing biopsy of the cultural cancer of narcotics. An excellent cast in this four-Oscar winner includes Michael Douglas, Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro and Don Cheadle.
3. The Brothers -- Four lifelong friends cope with the women in their lives in Gary Hardwick's refreshing comedy of manners set among affluent African-Americans.
4. Heartbreakers -- Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt play a mother-daughter con team with designs on a tobacco tycoon's fortune. Gene Hackman is hilarious as the grumpy old victim.
5. Pollock -- Ed Harris and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden star in this occasionally brilliant biography of abstract painter Jackson Pollock.
