Bobby 'Blue' Bland in Tampa
Legendary blues singer Bobby "Blue" Bland is enjoying a resurgence with the recent reissue of his 1961 debut Two Steps to the Blues, featuring the hits I Pity the Fool and I'll Take Care of You. Now, the 71-year-old smoothie comes to town reminding blues lovers of his seductive, soulful croon. Winner of a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, Bland was one of the original Beale Streeters, the blues supergroup consisting of, among others, Johnny Ace, Junior Parker and B.B. King, who says of Bland, "He gives the blues, with his gorgeous voice of satin, something it never had before. He lifts the blues."
Bland performs at 8 p.m. Sunday at Centro Asturiano, 1913 N Nebraska Ave., Tampa. Tickets are $25. (813) 598-8021.
Not your papa's rock
Nu-metal meisters Papa Roach charms fans with an assaulting rock-meets-hip-hop approach that the Northern California band pulls off better than most. That's thanks to lead screamer Coby Dick's almost introspective lyrics and a knack for rap.
Orgy features freakazoid lead singer Jay Gordon, he of the pretty boy, glammy Goth makeup and hair. The band, from L.A., plays crushing hard rock with splashes of danceable electronica. Gordon is obviously influenced by British New Wave; check out his affected singing and the band's cover of New Order's Blue Monday.
Papa Roach, Orgy and Alien Ant Farm perform 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Florida State Fairgrounds, U.S. 301 off Interstate 4, Tampa. Tickets are $22.50. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
