TAMPA -- The City Council on Thursday agreed to tighten water restrictions to combat the drought.

TAMPA -- The City Council on Thursday agreed to tighten water restrictions to combat the drought.

While the new ordinance does not change existing watering days and times within the city limits, it does forbid charity carwashes, unless they are held at commercial car washes using recycled water.

The ordinance also forbids the use of fountains solely for decorative purposes, and the washing of buildings without low-volume pressure washing equipment.

In addition, it prohibits the watering in of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, except on a person's designated watering day, unless a licensed professional is applying the chemicals.

The Water Department said the ordinance will take effect immediately.
