Exchanging roles for the Stock ExchangeBy LINDA D. COLE and INGRID L. KOHLER © St. Petersburg Times, published March 31, 2001 The staff has decided it needs a change of pace, so this column is going on vacation for the month of April. We've decided to write stock market analyses for a few weeks as a new challenge. (Why would we really want to do that? See the last sentence in today's column.) Wally Otting of Pinellas Park has graduated to a computer and would like to give his word processor to someone who could use it. It is a Smith Corona Personal Word Processor, PWP 4500 Plus, with an 11-inch monitor, owner's manual and start-out manual. It also comes with two Daisy wheels and two new ribbons. Please call Wally at (727) 548-0429. Faith Garner of Palm Harbor needs help finding a pattern from the 1960s for a knitted sweater. It was a Red Cross pattern frequently used by her church group up North. It had a boat neck and dropped sleeves and was knitted in one piece, so only one seam at the side was needed. She believes stitches were picked up for the sleeves, and the cuffs were simple ribbing. Faith may be reached at (727) 781-4964 or by e-mail to katoga@juno.com. Pat Perry of Dunedin has mislaid the instructions that came with a Brother CE-40 Correcting 40 electric typewriter. If you can assist, please call (727) 738-1454. Janice Johnson of Spring Hill is looking for the wire-bound songbooks for piano or organ that were available during the 1970s and '80s from Reader's Digest. They are no longer available, and Janet is hoping to complete her collection. She may be reached at (352) 683-3663. Got a thing for cows? Lynne Thompson of St. Petersburg used to have a country decor in her home, but she is over it now and looking for greener pastures for a collection of cows. She has cows for walls, tables, what have you, and a few stuffed ones too, all guaranteed free of foot and mouth disease. If you're mooooved to do so, give Lynne a call at (727) 894-4415. Davida Petrie needs new homes for an extensive collection of magazines, which date back about 10 years. Among the titles are Family Circle, Woman's Day, Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens. They are issues from the months of November and December, so they should be filled with good ideas for the holidays. Davida is awaiting your call at (727) 791-6411. Forget the Dow. Buttons' stock seems to be rising lately in this column. Michaele Clayton of Clearwater has taken on a new project that requires buttons, plain or fancy. If you've got a bunch lying around, Michaele would love to hear from you at (727) 799-4405. Valerie is looking for a used Hooked on Phonics program, with the cassettes and other materials related to it, for her second-grade son. Please answer her in care of this column. Mable Bryson of Pinellas Park needs a crochet pattern for shoulder wraps for hospice patients but not the V-shaped stole variety. Mable's number is (727) 528-7233. Barbara of Lecanto also needs a crochet pattern but for a tablecloth. She needs a pattern not made with individual motifs but in panels or one piece. It should be at least 70 inches long. Please call (352) 637-5227 if you can help. Patricia MacManus, a Girl Scout leader from Seminole, wants to show her troop some of the uniforms from what the girls would doubtless call "the olden days" but Patricia calls the 1950s to the '70s. These included beanie caps, ties, belts and dresses for the junior or cadette Brownie. If you have items that could be included in this historical fashion show, please call Patricia at (727) 392-6583. Thank-you noteAdelaide Aikman asked our help to thank all 27 readers who called to offer her the words for an Irish song. She appreciates the kindness and generosity of spirit each one showed. Added thanks go to Jim Anderson and to Pat Clarke, who faxed the lyrics to Adelaide. * * * We aren't going to be doing stock analyses, and we will be back next Saturday. Tomorrow is April Fool's Day!! * * * Send requests to Reader Exchange, Home & Garden, the Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com. Only questions of general interest will be answered. Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail; no phoned requests, please. Readers must agree to publication of phone numbers (please include area code).
