Southern Baptists to end latest talks with Catholics

Southern Baptist officials have decided that their latest round of official talks with Roman Catholics, which have existed for about 30 years, will end next year.

Martin King, spokesman for the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board, said the decision relates to the structure of the board, which usually focuses on starting new churches and evangelism.

"There was no pressure from any element," he said. The Rev. Frank Ruff, a Catholic priest who has attended Southern Baptist annual meetings since 1969, said he will be sorry to see the current set of talks end.

"I think it would be safe to say that there's a sense of disappointment that they're going to stop after all of these years and with so much more to be worked on," he said.
