Hasek, Sabres in form at right time

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fresh from his league-leading 11th shutout and helping the Sabres clinch their fourth straight playoff berth, Dominik Hasek was sporting a new watch.

Hasek stopped 30 shots, shutting out Atlanta for the second time in five nights, in leading the Sabres to a 4-0 victory over the Thrashers on Friday night.

The watch was a gift from his teammates for playing his 500th game earlier this season.

"I feel good about my game. But what happened, I want to leave it behind me and get ready for the next game," Hasek said. "I'm really excited. The team's playing well. I like the chemistry."

The Sabres closed within one point of fourth-place Philadelphia for home-ice advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

HURRICANES 4, CAPITALS 3 (OT): Rod Brind'Amour scored 3:07 into overtime for host Carolina, which took a one-point lead over Boston for the final East playoff berth. The Caps' Glen Metropolit tied it at 3 with 12:03 left in the third period. Carolina's Glen Wesley returned after missing 11 games with a broken jaw.

SENATORS 5, BRUINS 4 (OT): Martin Havlat scored 2:26 into overtime, and Patrick Lalime made 44 saves for host Ottawa. Havlat's breakaway goal capped a wild game in which the Senators trailed three times. Ottawa rallied from a two-goal, second-period deficit to regain the East lead from New Jersey.

STARS 5, OILERS 4: Joe Nieuwendyk and Brenden Morrow each scored twice for visiting Dallas, which erased a two-goal deficit. Dallas clinched the Pacific Division title and stretched its unbeaten streak to nine games. Richard Matvichuk snapped a 3-3 tie 5:12 into the third and Morrow made it 5-3 with 7:02 left.

Domi fined $1,000

The NHL fined Toronto forward Tie Domi the maximum $1,000 on Friday for squirting water at fans from the penalty box before scuffling with a spectator.

Domi wasn't suspended for his actions during a 2-1 victory Thursday over Philadelphia. The NHL's collective-bargaining agreement does not allow larger fines.

Responding to taunts, Domi sprayed water on fans in the front row. Chris Falcone of Havertown, Pa., lunged toward Domi and landed on the glass partition separating fans from the box. The glass broke, Falcone tumbled into the box and he and Domi scuffled before linesman Kevin Collins stepped in.

Falcone, 36, got a summary violation, roughly equal to a traffic ticket but requiring a court hearing.

Also, Maple Leafs president Ken Dryden said former Philadelphia captain Eric Lindros might still end up with Toronto if a trade can be worked out after the playoffs.

SHARKS: Vincent Damphousse, out since Jan. 15 with a dislocated left shoulder, said he plans to return in time for San Jose's first home playoff game.

Late Thursday

SHARKS 7, MIGHTY DUCKS 4: Teemu Selanne had a hat trick for host San Jose in his first game against Anaheim since his old team traded him. Paul Kariya, who teamed with Selanne in Anaheim for five years as one of the NHL's most dynamic duos, got his fifth career hat trick.
