CCC's Zumwalt not modest on the court

Marauder's all-around play led team to a 26-6 season, district title.

It was late last season, during Chris Zumwalt's junior year, and CCC coach Bart Citro was talking about his top player. Zumwalt, an athletic point guard who was having a breakthrough season, would earn third-team all-county status that season.

"You'd be surprised," Citro said. "As good as he is, Chris sometimes lacks confidence."

How could someone that good lack confidence? It's just part of his off-court persona, Zumwalt says, part of an effort to be modest and humble and respectful. On the court? Forget it -- he's brimming with confidence.

With Zumwalt driving the train and doing a lot of everything for the Marauders, CCC steamed to a 26-6 record, district title and Class 3A region semifinal, where it lost to eventual state champion Florida Air Academy.

For his accomplishments, Zumwalt is the Times Pinellas County co-Player of the Year.

"Off the court, that's very true. I don't want to look cocky or arrogant. Nobody likes that," said Zumwalt, a 6-footer with an impressive dunk arsenal who averaged 15.9 points, 6.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.5 rebounds per game. "On the court, I'm never afraid. I don't fear anybody on the court."

A four-year varsity player, Zumwalt dropped baseball while growing up to concentrate on basketball, which he started playing at age 7. At CCC he has become immersed in athletics. Among his best friends are several CCC football players, and his girlfriend, Stacy Typrowicz, is a Times honorable mention all-county defender on the school's final four soccer team. Zumwalt's college plans are still fuzzy. He has several small Division I and Division II scholarship offers, and he has been invited to walk on at Miami. He's also considering walking on at Florida, where his brother attends school.

Zumwalt was one of eight seniors on the CCC team that went 47-16 the past two seasons.

"I think we did real well," Zumwalt said. "All of the seniors are real close off the court, like best friends.

"We're really going to miss it."
