Mustangs win over ChargersBy PETE YOUNG © St. Petersburg Times, published April 3, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Before David Scott came in to pitch Monday for Northside Christian, the game was a mess. Hits, errors, walks, hit batsmen, more errors -- by the end of the second inning there were a combined eight runs on nine hits and five errors. Like the teacher walking back into the classroom and immediately restoring order, Scott put a halt to all of that. The sophomore right-hander entered in the top of the third, and in five innings he struck out 12, allowed two hits, no walks and one run as the Mustangs prevailed 6-3. Northside (16-2, 5-0) clinched the top seed in Class 2A, District 12. Shorecrest fell to 12-6, 3-3. "(Scott) had some good stuff going tonight," Northside coach Darrell Don said. "This is probably his best outing of the season." Shorecrest starter Sean Wiggins was undone by shoddy defense and ineffectiveness. After an error, four singles and another error, the Mustangs led 3-0. Two errors by Northside helped the Chargers cut it to 3-2 in the top of the second off Northside starter Andy Park. In the bottom of the second, after a leadoff walk, Matt Newton relieved Wiggins and promptly allowed consecutive run-scoring hits to Brian LeClerc and Park. A dropped fly ball plated Park to make it 6-2. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
