Crystal River man charged with punching deputy
CRYSTAL RIVER -- A 35-year-old man was arrested Monday after he punched a sheriff's deputy in the jaw and then locked himself in a bathroom, according to an arrest report.
Robert William Bernstein, of 5438 E Jasmine Lane, was being served a writ by Deputy Pam Lafoe and Detective Luther Willis on Monday afternoon when he began to verbally resist. Soon after other deputies arrived, Bernstein ran away.
According to a report, he stopped after about 25 yards and told deputies, "Come on. You want a piece of this?" He then punched one deputy in the left jaw, then ran away again. Bernstein locked himself in the bathroom of Costa's Deli, 6677 W Gulf-to-Lake Highway.
Deputies got an employee to unlock the door, and they sprayed Bernstein with pepper spray to subdue him. Deputies finally were able to handcuff him and put him in the back of a patrol car.
He was charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and damaging property. Bernstein was taken to Citrus County jail, where he remained Tuesday without bond.
