Citrus High student a Governor's All-Star
By TREVOR JONES © St. Petersburg Times, published April 5, 2001 INVERNESS -- Citrus High School student Chester Wheeler was selected as the Citrus County School District recipient of the Governor's All-Star Award. He joined Gov. Jeb Bush in the capitol on March 30. The All-Stars Award honors one high school junior from each school district throughout Florida. Criteria for selection include: academic success, at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, good behavior, leadership skills, participation in extracurricular activities and community service. A panel of at least one teacher, one administrator, one parent, one community member and two high school seniors selects the high school juniors who best reflect these attributes. Wheeler, 16, is a junior and has a 4.0 GPA. He is in the band, a member of Students Working Against Tobacco and in the National Honor Society and Beta Club. He is on the track team. He volunteers at Citrus Memorial Hospital and plans to pursue a medical career at University of Miami. During Wheeler's day in Tallahassee, Lt. Gov. Frank Brogan spoke to the All-Stars during breakfast at the Capitol. Later, Bush and Brogan were hosts for a luncheon at the Governor's Mansion, followed by a round-table discussion. The students toured the Capitol, participated in a mock session in the House Chambers and each received a signed photo of the governor and an award certificate. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
