ClassnotesBy Times staff reports © St. Petersburg Times, published April 5, 2001 A FLASH OF LIGHT AND ALL THAT JAZZ: Inverness Middle School will present "A Flash of Light and All That Jazz" at 7 tonight in the cafetorium. The cafetorium will be transformed into a gallery/coffeehouse and filled with student performances, including the IMS Jazz Band, IMS Show Choir Flame and visual art displays. Special guest is nationally renowned jazz musician Fred Johnson from the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Former IMS Jazz Band members will join the 2000-2001 Jazz Band in a Jazz Band alumni reunion. There will be cappuccino, soda and cookies available, as well as art for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Fine Arts Department. There will be a book fair with proceeds going to the school's media center. Admission is free, although donations would be appreciated. ENVIRONMENTAL STATE COMPETITION: High school students from around the state will test their natural resource skills at the 2001 Florida Envirothon from 8:10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hillsborough River State Park. The Florida Envirothon will feature 27 five-member teams. The contest is a natural resource education program for high school students. It encourages critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills to answer written questions or conduct hands-on investigations about environmental issues. "El Nino" from Citrus High School will represent Citrus County. The winner of the state competition will be eligible to compete on the national level in July at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss. CITRUS COMMUNITY BAND CONCERT: The 44-piece Citrus Community Band will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday in the Forest Ridge Elementary School cafetorium. FRES students, under the direction of art teacher Juie Miele and music teacher Joellen Collazo, will participate in the program. Donations will be received at the door to benefit the school's music and art departments and the Community Band. MYSTERY PRODUCTION: The Inverness Middle School Drama Club will present The Comeback Caper at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria. The cast includes Megan Warner, Elizabeth Lavery, Zach Alfson, Brandon Rubino, Tatiana Pooton, Brittney Rhinesmith, Laurel Furbish, Katie Bywater, Courtney Bass, Ashley Bigge, Judy Hawley, Ariana Santiago, Jessica Atz, Lakeshia Hills, Andy Gelin and Rachael Gelin. MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT DAY: Citrus Springs Elementary School's exceptional student education department is offering a "More Alike than Different Day" along with a PAW's for Reading assembly for parents and the public from 8:45 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Tuesday at the school. The program will include two opportunities to attend a PAW's for Reading assembly. PAW's for Reading is a service fundraiser to train animals for people who are sight- or hearing-impaired or have seizures and would benefit from having the animals. The conference also will include strategies for parents to use with ADD/ADHD children, functional behavioral assessment information and communication techniques and strategies. USF DAY EVENT: Central Florida Community College will host a University of South Florida Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday on the Ocala Campus between buildings 5 and 7. USF representatives will be on hand from admissions, the financial aid office and adult and transfer student services. There will also be advisers from the university's arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, fine arts, and nursing divisions. Those who attend will be able to receive transcript evaluations, scholarship information and information about the transfer process. A USF adviser will give on-the-spot admissions decisions for associate degree recipients only. HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW DAY: Central Florida Community College, Ocala, will host a High School Preview Day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m April 20. High school juniors in Citrus and Levy counties are invited to plan their educational futures and to learn how CFCC may help them attain their goals. The program will feature information about educational options, career choices, scholarships, financial aid, honors programs, athletics and student activities. HOMOSASSA AT SUGARMILL: Sixty Homosassa Elementary School students under the direction of music teacher Donna Olson will perform at 10 a.m. April 30 at Sugarmill Manor. The program will be an All American Review. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP: The Citrus County School Readiness Coalition, in partnership with Hernando, Lake, Marion and Sumter Readiness Coalitions, will present Sarah Sprinkle's Character Development Workshop from 9 a.m to 2 p.m., with registration from 8 to 9 a.m., May 19 at Rock Crusher Canyon. The workshop is open to parents, grandparents, foster parents, child care providers, teachers and administrators. Participants will receive information and materials to help teach skills that children need for living confident, happy, productive lives. There is a $5 registration fee that includes a deli buffet lunch.
