Model electric railway group to meet in OcalaBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published April 5, 2001 OCALA -- The Electric Railway Clubs of Florida will have the 16th Annual Trolley Meet at the Webber Center on the campus of Central Florida Community College, just east of Interstate 75 on State Road 200, during the weekend of April 27, 28 and 29. This meet is a full weekend of prototype and modeling programs at a location that permits assembly of modular traction layouts for operation. The meet will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 28. Visitors can view model trolleys and streetcars operating on modular layouts. All trolleys will be powered by overhead wires. The Electric Railway Clubs of Florida, formed in 1986, is a non-profit organization of nearly 75 traction fans throughout Florida. There are three divisions: Southeast (Indian River County South), Orlando (Central and Northeastern Florida) and Tampa Bay (West coast), and each division holds five or six meetings annually, which are hosted by members on a round-robin basis. Meetings usually consist of showing video tapes or slides, traction oriented conversation and occasionally "show and tell" involving models and artifacts. The annual Trolley meet, which is model oriented, is sponsored by each division on a rotating basis. There is also a quarterly newsletter The Live Overhead providing prototype and modeling information. The clubs define "Traction" to be almost any prototype (full-size) electric railway including: Streetcars, Trolley Cars, Electric Interurban Railways, Electrified Railroads, Subways, Elevated Railways, Light Rail Lines and Cable Cars (not strictly trolley cars, but in the fold). Membership is open. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
