The barely awake, but excited students left Citrus High school at 4:30 a.m. on March 17, a Saturday, when most other high school students just beginning spring break and sleeping in. They were "on tour" and heading to Washington D.C.

When they arrived in Charleston, S.C., they were able to shop and get the rest they all desperately needed. Then they started singing. Day by day, they performed in such places as Fort Sumter in Charleston, St. Bede's Church in Williamsburg, Va., the Marketplace in downtown Jamestown, and the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington, D.C.

The program was a combination of the choir, soloists, instruments and sign language. Months of work and dedication went into the performances by the Concert and Chamber Choirs, including after-school rehearsals. The students and officers of the chorus worked hard to make this happen.

The students also had time to have fun. A tour guide accompanied them in Washington and they learned about the different memorials. They were able to eat where they chose and had lots of shopping time. Their last day they were even allowed time to tour the various Smithsonian museums.

One student, Jason Varkett, found information on an ancestor who fought in the Civil War in the National Archives.

Other students just appreciated the opportunities to sing in different locations.

"Everywhere we traveled, there were different dialects. However, the universal language of music is understood and appreciated nationwide," said junior Brendan Luce, the chorus' president. "I am elated that we could share our melodious gifts with others, and that they accepted them so graciously."

Senior Jon Terry agreed.

"I enjoyed spending the majority of my spring break with my close friends and I also loved the fact that I spent it doing what I love the most," he said. "We were all able to share our God-given gift with people other than those of Citrus County."
