Ex-POW program to be celebrated

The VA Outpatient Clinic will celebrate the Ex-Prisoners of War Program from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the new clinic, at 9912 Little Road, New Port Richey.

The keynote speaker will be Rick Harry, former POW coordinator of the VA regional office. Representatives for U.S. Reps. Karen L. Thurman and Michael Bilirakis will read remarks on their behalf.

Economic development forums are planned

The public is invited to two public forums on the future of economic development in Hernando County.

The two forums are scheduled for 9 a.m. April 11 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville, and at 6:30 p.m. April 12 at the Knights of Columbus building, 10470 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill.

Library to feature works of artist, 80, all month

The West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Library has announced that Lillian Tetley is the featured artist for April.

Tetley, 80, has no formal training and considers her ability to paint and sculpt a God-given gift. She was recently awarded three ribbons at the Hernando County Fair. Tetley's paintings will be on display through April at the library, 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill.

Female golfers of all levels are invited to join group

Ladylinks.golf league will hold its new member kickoff from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 12 at Timber Pines Golf & Country Club, 6872 Timber Pines Blvd., Spring Hill.

The cost is $10. The league has 50 members from Hernando, Pasco and Hillsborough counties and is open to all women interested in golf, regardless of their skill level. Kickoff includes a putting contest, course tour, golf schedule, registration, food and cash bar.

Ladylinks.golf will play nine holes at 5 p.m. every Thursday at Timber Pines.

Revocable living trusts to be explained April 17

A free educational presentation by Lawstar Inc. on revocable living trusts will be held at 2:30 p.m. April 17 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane, Brooksville.

Issues will include wills versus living trusts, how to avoid probate, conservatorship and unnecessary estate taxes. Couples are encouraged to attend together. For reservations, call (800) 248-5207.

Children's singing group plans auditions Saturday

The Nature Coast Children's Festival Singers is accepting appointments for auditions Saturday.

The group is looking for boys and girls of elementary and middle school ages. No experience is necessary. For information or to set up an audition appointment, call 684-2037 or 688-2207.

Applications accepted for Head Start program

The Head Start program has begun recruitment for the 2001-2002 school term.

To apply, individuals must have a diagnosis for special-needs children, a certified birth certificate, copy of certified complete and current immunization record (blue form), guardianship verification if applicable, Social Security numbers for parent and child, proof of income, and Medicaid, HMO or insurance card if applicable.

For proof of income, one of the following is acceptable: a current check stub, W-2 form, WAGES/TANF payment stub or letter, SSI verification amount, statement of earnings from employer, unemployment verification by the state Unemployment Office, a notarized statement of earnings if self-employed, form 1099, or child support. The child must be 3 or 4 years old by September. Applications are being accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or by appointment, at the Moton Early Intervention Center, 840 St. Francis St., Brooksville; Kennedy Park office, 880 Kennedy Blvd., Brooksville; J.D. Floyd Elementary School, Head Start office, 3139 Dumont Ave., Spring Hill; Suncoast Elementary School, Head Start office, 11135 Quality Drive, Spring Hill; and Central High School, Head Start office, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville.

Master gardeners plan plant sale Saturday

The Hernando County master gardeners will have a spring plant sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville.

There will be a wide selection of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, herbs and houseplants.

The master gardeners use the proceeds for educational purposes. Call 754-4433.

Christian women set lunch at country club

The Brooksville Spring Hill Christian Women's Club invites all women to a "New Energy of Spring Luncheon" from noon to 1:30 p.m. April 10 at Silverthorn Country Club.

The cost is $11. Complimentary child care is available upon request.

Restaurant to show off fishing village look

Backwaters Bar & Grill will unveil its beautification project at 1 p.m. Monday at the restaurant, 6024 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill.

Murals have been painted on the building, and hand-painted wooden houses have been mounted on top to portray a fishing village.

Rummage sale is set Saturday in Brooksville

The Dawn Center will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 15009 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.

Polish-American club plans meal, dance Sunday

The Polish-American Social Club will hold its weekly dinner-dance Sunday at the clubhouse, 7615 New Jersey Ave., Hudson.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with dinner from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The menu features roast pork, roast beef or chicken, soup, salad, vegetable and dessert. Dancing from 1-2:30 p.m. with music provided by the Music Blenders.

Chesapeake Bay Club schedules shrimp feast

The Chesapeake Bay Club will hold its annual shrimp feast during the monthly meeting at 1 p.m. April 24 at Deltona Woods Park off Deltona Boulevard.

The cost is $7.50 per person, and reservations are needed.

Members are asked to bring their own place settings and a covered dish to serve eight. Sodas will be available for 25 cents each, or attendees may bring drinks.

Spring Hill Publix offers Easter egg hunt, snacks

Publix at Lakewood Plaza will hold an Easter egg hunt at 7 a.m. April 14 at the store, 4365 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, for children ages 1-12.

Art talk, dessert to combine April 12

The Hernando County Fine Arts Council will hold Desserts with the Arts at 7:30 p.m. April 12 at Pasco-Hernando Community College in Spring Hill. Robert Marsh will discuss "Mesoamerican Art." Marsh has made countless research trips to Mexico.

The program and desserts are free to members, or $3 for non-members.
