Police reportsBy Times staff reports © St. Petersburg Times, published April 5, 2001 Deputy reprimanded for safety violationA Hernando County sheriff's deputy received a reprimand for his actions during a suicide threat. Deputy Jason Brough was rebuked for violating a safety policy by bringing a member of the agency's youth Explorer program to the scene, records state. He also was told that he should not have issued a careless driving citation to a media photographer who was covering the suicide threat, which occurred at Bayport Park on Feb. 20 when a man pulled out a gun on a crowded dock. Officials were able to talk the man down, and no one was injured. According to employees of Hernando Today, Brough was rude to them at the scene and told the photographer that he would be taking pictures from the jail if he did not listen to the deputy's instructions. Authorities were unable to substantiate that accusation but ruled that the photographer did not deserve the ticket he was issued, records state. Brough was given a written reprimand and suspended as an adviser to the Explorer program. Internal Affairs officials began investigating after Hernando Today filed a complaint. Student arrested for bringing gun to schoolA Hernando High School student faces multiple charges after he broke into two homes, stole several guns and then brought one of them to school, authorities said. The 16-year-old boy, whose name the Times is withholding because of his age, was arrested Tuesday and taken to the juvenile detention center in Ocala. According to sheriff's reports, the teen admitted to breaking into a home on Arlaine Road south of Brooksville and stole a gun, jewelry and cash. He also stole five guns out of another home on Phillips Road south of Brooksville but later returned them, he told officials. The boy was arrested after a deputy spotted him in a Hernando High parking lot with a small object in his hands. The teen said it was a change bag and when the deputy asked if he had anything else on him, the boy told him he had a gun tucked in his pants, the report said.
