TAMPA -- Don Shea, the county's chief code enforcement officer, has been named interim director of Hillsborough's Community Improvement Department.
The community improvement director oversees an annual budget of $29-million in federal and state grants for housing assistance. It is also the center of the county's code enforcement program.
Shea will replace Kevin McConnell, who is on medical leave. About three weeks ago, McConnell voluntarily checked himself into a rehabilitation program for alcohol abuse and depression, said Anthony Shoemaker, assistant county administrator.
McConnell, a 16-year county employee is scheduled to return to work Monday and will be reassigned to the Public Safety Department, where he will work on marine-related projects, Shoemaker said.
Shea will continue as head of code enforcement while serving as director of community improvement. The department has a staff of 75 employees with another 40 people working as contractors.
