Candidate reply
© St. Petersburg Times, published April 5, 2001 The Times offers candidates not recommended by its editorial board an opportunity to reply. Here is one of those replies. John DiGiorgio, Candidate for New Port Richey City CouncilIt came as no surprise that you chose to endorse the present City Council since you have been behind them from the start. When all incumbents were first elected into office, they were not polished politicians, nor did they have experience in the political world. According to the mayor, the city has "a cash flow problem." Evicting the senior citizens from the New Port Richey Shuffleboard Club, which they have used for many years and is city owned, and Mr. Finn's consideration of purchasing homes under the $25,000 homestead act to be razed and a new home built without consideration to the homeowner, for the sake of a dollar, is unconscionable. Yes, this city has been declared a blighted area. Does that mean our leaders can do as they please through assessments? Why can't they manage their money better? Why did they spend millions of dollars fixing Main Street? Why are executive salaries (including benefits) so high? Putting in a skateboard park is a great idea for our younger generation, but who is going to pay for the insurance that will be needed if, God forbid, one of the users should get hurt? And you know that will happen! The decision to overturn (City Manager Gerald) Seeber's decision was based on the knowledge that prior city employees were given a second chance and proved to be outstanding employees who are still employed by the city. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
