Sun won't set on medieval knight
A limp 1993 French farce, Les Visiteurs, made the usual art-house rounds with a yarn about a medieval knight (Jean Reno, above left with Christina Applegate) and his servant (Christian Clavier) transported to modern times. Big hit in France at a time when Hollywood loved turning Gallic comedies into junk like Jungle 2 Jungle and Fathers' Day. Rather than a remake, Mel Brooks dubbed the original into English, which tanked in limited release. Now Disney retreats to square one, making an unnecessary American version called Just Visiting. Reno and Clavier return with Applegate co-starring. Previews look like Hocus Pocus 2.
New Pokemon ad . . er, movie
Pokemon the Movie 3 debuts Friday, and if a plot synopsis is needed, you should be paying more attention to pop culture. There will be a lot of cuddly creatures grunting and squealing their way through hallucinatory adventures in order to convey elementary lessons in kindness and cooperation. Commendable, except the real Pokemon masters running the marketing division are working overtime to make sure children buy the newest wave of merchandise. A movie ticket is just another revenue source, not motivation for quality.
