Meaning is in a viewer's eye
Antonio Caparello's style, as seen in My Bluebird -- Or Things I Found Around, recalls that of James Rosenquist who, like Caparello, began his career as a billboard artist. In fact, Caparello worked as Rosenquist's assistant from 1988 to 1998. Since then he has struck out on his own. My Bluebird marks that transition in a personal way. But other interpretations are possible, especially in the discarded objects, barbed wire and gun barrels pointed at the viewer. The subtleties of meaning without resolution raise the commercial style to fine art. On another level, the objects work as abstract shapes in the overall composition. The work measures 40 by 110 inches and is on view in Caparello's one-man show, "Myths and Metaphors," at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center, 101 S Pinellas Ave., Tarpon Springs; (727) 942-5605. Hours through April 21 are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday). Tip: See it this Saturday, along with the Tarpon Springs Arts & Crafts Show. Free.
