Country's new tricks

[Pubicity photo] |
Country newcomers Trick Pony recently released a debut that showcases lead singer Heidi Newfield's yelping and growling and bluesy delivery. She's ferocious.
But, don't be scared; Newfield, a California girl, hones the intensity when she needs to and sounds fine on duets with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash (the latter on the band's wicked rockabilly cover of Big River).
Trick Pony sounds young and wild and free. That's a good thing these days for Nashville. Aren't we all yawning over all that formulaic junk on country radio? Once upon a time, country music meant raucous and rootsy. Yelping wasn't suspect; it was positively essential.
Trick Pony performs at 10 p.m. Saturday at the Round Up, 13918 W Hillsborough Ave., Tampa. Tickets are $7 advance, $9 at the door. (813) 855-1464.
Fun despite the name
Rocket From the Crypt. Cheery name, eh? From sunny San Diego, Rocket From the Crypt has been churning out fun, accessible punk rock for more than a decade. Big, clean choruses and tasty saxophone and trumpet give RFTC a soulful spin.
But why the scary name? Legend has it RFTC was paying tribute to Rocket From the Tombs, the late 1970s band from Cleveland that later morphed into legendary underground punk band Pere Ubu.
Rocket From the Crypt performs at 8 p.m. Friday at the State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Tickets are $9.99. (727) 898-2100.
