ON THE MOVE
The Brown Dog Cafe, a neighborhood favorite for homespun fusion in northeast St. Petersburg (229 62nd Ave. N, St. Petersburg; (727) 525-5830) moves to the high street (3451 Fourth St. N); in early June. The new spot will seat 60 and beer and wine will be added to the menu.
Panera Bread's first spot in Pinellas (2285 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater; (727) 592-9690) is its largest yet, serving hungry e-workers in the wedge city of Feather Sound. In two weeks, panini, lattes and more come to Bardmoor (10801 Starkey Road, Largo) in two weeks. The chain aims to give bread Starbucks hipness -- and success. Panera will open in Countryside, Palm Harbor, Hyde Park, Carrollwood and New Tampa by early 2002; Tampa now has three.
SWAMPWATER
Australian winery Banrock Station chips in to preserve the Everglades with a donation for every bottle sold. To help out, Native Seafood (5901 Sun Blvd., Pinellas Bayway, St. Petersburg; (727) 866-8772) is buying a free bottle of chard or shiraz to couples ordering two dinner entrees Monday through Thursday through May.
I'VE HAD ENOUGH . . .
Waiters who don't know the menu. "I never tried that," is of no help. "It's all good," is of no credibility. Proud restaurants let waiters try it all and make knowledgeable recommendations. Call it selling.
