Mike McHugh, vice president of operations, says his decision is not connected to a change of ownership.

Mike McHugh, vice president of Florida Crushed Stone's operations the past four years, resigned this week to spend more time with his family.

McHugh, 38, said he resigned Monday, effective immediately, though he will remain as a consultant for an undetermined amount of time.

"I've just decided to take a step back and that it's time for a change for myself personally, and to take the opportunity to spend more time with my family and do the things I haven't been able to do," he said.

McHugh plans to remain in Spring Hill with his wife, Lynne, and their three children, ages 11, 10 and 8. He said his decision was entirely personal and had nothing to do with the change in ownership of the company, whose Hernando location is north of Brooksville.

CSR America of West Palm Beach bought Florida Crushed Stone's parent company, FCS Holdings. At the time the plan of the sale was announced last year, employees speculated that top management positions would change after the deal.

Replacing McHugh will be Mark Lacke, who ran CSR's sand operations in Florida, said Chris Piermatteo, the executive assistant.

McHugh saw Florida Crushed Stone through trying times, including a battle with the County Commission to approve a second cement kiln at its site north of Brooksville. Eventually the company won approval but has put off its plans for a second kiln because of the economic slowdown.

McHugh says he intends to continue his involvement in local organizations, such as the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, Pasco-Hernando Hospice and Hernando Progress.

He hasn't decided what type of employment he'll seek after he completes consulting work with Florida Crushed Stone.

"I need to figure out what I'm good at," he said with a laugh.
