TAMPA -- From where Brian Butterfield is sitting, he knows he has it made.

TAMPA -- From where Brian Butterfield is sitting, he knows he has it made.

"Right now I'm in the same chair that Joe Torre sat in during spring training," Butterfield said. "I guess he was keeping it warm for me."

Butterfield, the former Diamondbacks third-base coach, is back with the Yankees organization for the first time since 1995. He returns as manager of the Tampa Yankees, the big-league club's advanced Class A affiliate.

It is a long way from the big leagues, but Butterfield, 43, also knows he is with an organization that is not exactly minor league. He is developing players for the world champions and his team plays at Legends Field, a small-scale replica of Yankee Stadium.

"My wife (Jan) had called and was concerned how I would be handling this, being away from the big leagues," Butterfield said. "It's different, but this is a great situation for me. I'm back with a tremendous organization, a great scouting depertment that develops strong players and we're in a tremendous facility. I couldn't ask for much more."

Yankees fans might remember Butterfield. His father, Jack, was once vice president of player development for the Yankees, and he was signed by the organization as a free agent in 1979. Brian played four years and spent another 13 years as a coach or manager with the Yankees.

In 1995, Butterfield's days of pinstripes ended when the Yankees fired Buck Showalter and did not retain him.

"It was weird, they (the Yankees) were just starting to build (Legends Field) in '95," Butterfield said. "I thought this was great. I would be here, too. Then I wasn't retained. I didn't know what I was going to do, but things turn out for the best."

Butterfield spent three seasons with Showalter in Arizona. Showalter was fired after last season and Butterfield was not retained. That gave him the opportunity to return to the Yankees.

It has been an adjustment. His 25-man roster wasn't finalized until he stepped onto the field for Wednesday's workout.

Nevertheless, the roster has some recognizable names. Sam Marsonek, a former Jesuit standout, is scheduled to start tonight. Catching will be David Parrish, the club's No. 1 pick last year and the son of former big-leaguer Lance Parrish.

"I've only been here here for the spring, so I don't know the guys as well as some of the other coaches who have been here longer," Butterfield said. "But from what I can see, it's a strong group. I like the arms and we some big guys providing offense. We have our 25 guys now and we'll go to work. I think this will be equally as fun as the big leagues, maybe even more so because I get to teach the guys."
