Lecanto senior Harold Skidmore, one of the county's most heralded wrestlers, will bid for a title in the National High School Championships in Newark, Del.
Skidmore left for the meet, which begins today and concludes Sunday, Wednesday night, just hours after he won the 139-pound class in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weightlifting meet. During the wrestling season, he went 41-2 and finished second in the 130-pound division of the Class A meet. Skidmore is a two-time state runner-up.
"He's never been to anything like this, and he's excited," Jane Skidmore, Harold's mother, said of the national tourney.
Seniors who've finished in the top two in their respective states are eligible. More than 800 participants from 47 states are expected.
