Not just a dance, it's a Happening

The end of the 20th century brought with it the flavor of the 1960s: bell bottoms, flip hairdos and clogs. But a lesser-known piece of the '60s, "the Happening," is taking place on the University of Tampa campus next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
For the past 10 years, Susan Taylor Lennon has pulled together UT's Student Dance Happening, which is choreographed and presented entirely by diverse groups of students from different majors. The event features various types of dance including jazz, modern, rock, ballet and tap dancing.
The students are provided with full technical support, complete with lighting, costumes and fog, Taylor Lennon said.
Starting in the new dance facility near the Bob Martinez Sports Center, the performance travels to the John H. Sykes College of Business Building and ends at the veranda of Plant Hall. The audience, led by robed guides, follows the show around campus.
This spring's performance includes a piece on homophobia and a step dance.
With the students at the reins of the show, Taylor Lennon says, things can get "a little on the wild side sometimes."
The Student Dance Happening is co-sponsored by Dance Expressions, the UT Dance Club and Student Activities. A free reception on the veranda will follow each performance.
