NEW PORT RICHEY -- The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of West Pasco is now registering people for the group's first annual "Doggie Dash" fundraiser on Saturday.

The organization hopes to get pledges for walkers in the one-mile fun walk through Starkey Wilderness Park to help fund the organization's efforts in caring for abused and abandoned pets. According to the organization's news release, "animal lovers, friends, relatives, co-workers and pets" are invited to walk.

There will be prizes and gifts for people raising certain amounts of money. The walk starts at 9 a.m.

The group has been helping abandoned animals since 1964, and in the past year has opened new offices and pledged to be more visible in around the west side of the county.

Those interested in the event can call the SPCA at (727) 849-1048 or go to its offices at 7734 Congress St. Registration and pledge forms can be picked up at the office or at Pet Food Warehouse, 5104 U.S. 19 in New Port Richey.
