Man shot in robbery attempt dies

ST. PETERSBURG -- A 20-year-old St. Petersburg man who was shot 10 days ago in what police called an attempted robbery died Saturday of the wounds he suffered in the incident, authorities said.

Lorenzo Darlington had been hospitalized since the incident at the Food Max grocery store, 1400 18th Ave. S., said George Kajtsa, St. Petersburg police spokesman. As Darlington, who was said to be wielding a gun, took money from the grocery store owner, a clerk drew a gun from a drawer and shot Darlington in the upper body, authorities said.

Police did not release the clerk's name.

Kajtsa said Monday that police were not planning to charge the convenience store clerk but would turn over their investigative files to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office for further deliberation.

"If there are any charges brought it will be the state attorney who does it," Kajtsa said. "We'll let them sift through it and decide what, if any, charges will be filed."

Police: Man dies after drinking heavily

ST. PETERSBURG -- A 27-year-old Largo man was found dead Sunday after a night of heavy drinking with a friend, authorities said. Foul play is not suspected.

Ryan Christopher Palvik of 225 Country Club Drive spent much of Saturday night and early Sunday drinking alcohol with Patrick J. McVeigh, 22, of St. Petersburg, said George Kajtsa, a St. Petersburg police spokesman.

The two stopped at a bar and a restaurant and drank alcohol until 5 or 6 a.m., Kajtsa said. They then went to McVeigh's home at 2545 Second Ave. N, where Palvik went to sleep in a spare bedroom.

McVeigh checked on Palvik about 10 a.m., but the man appeared to still be asleep and McVeigh left him in the bed, Kajtsa said. McVeigh tried to awaken Palvik about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and found the man was not breathing, so he called paramedics.

Kajtsa said the case has been referred to the medical examiner's office for further tests.

Accident killed one person, not two

BRANDON -- An accident that left a car upside down in water near Tampa Bay claimed only one victim, not two, sheriff's officials determined Monday.

Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said relatives of 27-year-old Jose Rico of Ruskin, whose body was found late Sunday near Cockroach Bay, had feared that an uncle may have been in Rico's car. However, a search by the Sheriff's Office dive team found no one else died in the crash, Carter said.

"They said the uncle must be somewhere else," she said.

Carter said Rico, of 3001 Gulf City Road in Ruskin, was westbound near the 4100 block of Cockroach Bay Road when his red 1998 Nissan left the road and landed upside-down in the canal between Tampa and Cockroach bays.

Rico's body was found about 8:30 p.m. It is not clear what time the accident happened.

    Armored car guard robbed, beaten

TAMPA -- A Brinks armored car guard was robbed and beaten Monday while making a delivery at the Outback restaurant at 11618 N Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood, police said. Alfonso Genco, 57, of 8505 N Huntley Ave. was taken to University Hospital in Carrollwood where he was being treated for minor injuries. Two robbers wearing stocking masks attacked Genco as he got out of the back of the Brinks truck. The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Cruise ship hits John's Pass Bridge

MADEIRA BEACH -- A gambling cruise ship, the Star Dancer Four, struck the fendering system of the John's Pass Bridge on Monday afternoon, Pinellas sheriff's deputies said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Marianne Pasha said ship captain James Hilliard and first mate Janet M. Schaaf were shifting the steering control from the center to port side when it apparently accidentally shifted to the starboard side. That, combined with a strong current, directed the ship into the fendering system on the northeast side of the bridge about 4:50 p.m., Pasha said.

The John's Pass Bridge was not damaged and remained open to traffic. The Coast Guard is investigating. The state Department of Transportation will inspect the fendering system for damage.
