The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation Inc. is sponsoring the Holocaust Remembrance Project, a national writing contest for high school students. The first-place winner from each region will receive $500, an all-expense paid trip to Israel to visit Yad Vashem and other historic sites, a gold medal and a certificate of participation. In addition, each first-place winner will compete for scholarships of up to $5,000. The purpose of the contest is to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. The deadline is May 14. The Devil Rays is sponsoring an essay contest this month for Pinellas County third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. Each participating school will hold its own contest and submit one essay. A panel of judges will select first-, second- and third-place winners from those submissions. In 500 words or less, students are invited to write about the impact of spectator sports on society or about a favorite baseball player. The Pinellas County Extension office will host a field trip from 10:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. on April 19 and 20 at Pinewood Cultural Park Botanical Gardens in Largo. The free Earth Day celebration will give students opportunities to participate in hands-on workshops on butterflies, recycling, nutrition, water conservation and other topics. Skycrest Elementary School will host registration from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 8 for pupils entering kindergarten. Parents will have an opportunity to meet the teachers and visit kindergarten classrooms. St. Luke Early Childhood Center, Palm Harbor, will hold their 6th Annual Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. on April 28 at Crescent Oaks Country Club. Entry fees are $85 per player, which includes the game and a sit-down dinner. Proceeds will benefit educational enrichment programs at the center.
