TORONTO -- Larry Rothschild said there was no question Toronto's Paul Quantrill intentionally threw at Steve Cox in the eighth inning.

TORONTO -- Larry Rothschild said there was no question Toronto's Paul Quantrill intentionally threw at Steve Cox in the eighth inning.

What the Rays manager wanted to know was why home plate umpire Brian Gorman didn't throw Quantrill out of the game.

"It's a situation where we were told in spring training if somebody throws at somebody, they go out immediately, and nothing happens," Rothschild said. "Last year I get thrown out of a game (against Boston) and suspended, and nothing happens (Monday). I think it's all b-------."

A half-inning earlier, Rays reliever Rusty Meacham hit Carlos Delgado, Toronto's star attraction, in the backside.

Quantrill retaliated to open the eighth by throwing his first pitch behind Cox. "I didn't think anything about it until it went right by me," Cox said.

Rothschild argued vehemently with Gorman.

"He said he didn't think (Quantrill) threw at him," Rothschild said. "I guess he didn't. He threw behind him."
